The verb comes from the native Arabic triliteral root th-m-l, which carries the core sense of intoxication or the dulling of the senses by drink. It is a Semitic root with no external borrowing behind it, common already in pre-Islamic and early Islamic poetry to describe wine-drinkers. The pattern of the verb, with a kasra on the middle radical, marks it as a stative verb describing an involuntary condition rather than a deliberate action.
