Etymology
Tha-mal comes from the Arabic triliteral root th-m-l, a native Semitic root with no established link to Proto-Indo-European. The same root produces tha-mi-la, the verb for becoming drunk, and thu-ma-la, the dregs or residue left in a cup. This suggests an old association between the last dregs of wine and the intoxication they bring.
