Etymology
The word traces back to Greek magnētēs, short for ho magnētēs lithos, the stone of Magnesia, a region in Asia Minor known for lodestone deposits. Arabic borrowed the noun as مغناطيس (magnet) through Syriac or Persian intermediaries during the medieval translation movement. The adjective مغنطيسي was then formed by adding the nisba suffix ـِيّ, the same ending used to turn any noun into a descriptive adjective. The Arabic word is thus a loanword adapted with native Arabic morphology.
