Etymology

Taqāʿud is the verbal noun of the Form VI verb taqāʿada, built on the root q-ʿ-d, whose base verb qaʿada means simply "to sit". Form VI often adds a reciprocal or gradual sense to a root, and here it shifted toward "sitting back" from active work. Over time this settled into the standard modern word for retirement, much as English "retire" once meant plain withdrawal before it took on its pension sense.
