Etymology

Maḥdūd is the passive participle of the verb ḥadda, built on the Semitic root ḥ-d-d, meaning to bound or delimit. The pattern maf'ūl turns that verb into an adjective describing something that has had a limit set on it. This root also gives Arabic the noun ḥadd, meaning border or limit, and ḥudūd, the borders or bounds of a country or a rule.
