Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic root s-k-r, whose base sense in Arabic is to block or dam something, as in damming a river. That sense of the mind being blocked or clouded gave rise to the meaning of drunkenness. Sakrān itself is built on the pattern fa'lān, which Arabic uses for temporary bodily or emotional states, the same pattern seen in words for angry, thirsty, or hungry.
