سُكْر comes from the Semitic root س-ك-ر (s-k-r), whose core sense is to block or stop up. Classical lexicographers link it to سِكْر, a dam that blocks water, since drunkenness is pictured as something that blocks or dams the mind's clarity. The same root gives سَكِرَ, the verb 'to become drunk,' and سُكْر as its abstract noun. Arabic is a Semitic language, so this word has no Indo-European ancestry.
