Etymology

The word comes from the Arabic root z-l-j, which carries the sense of sliding or gliding. Tazalluj is the verbal noun of the Form V verb tazallaja, built by adding the ta- prefix and doubling the middle root letter, a pattern that often marks a reflexive or repeated action. Modern Standard Arabic adopted this native root to name the sport of skiing and skating once winter sports spread into Arabic-speaking regions in the twentieth century.
