Etymology
حَدّ comes from the Semitic root ح-د-د, which joins the idea of sharpness with the idea of marking something off. The same root gives حَديد (iron) and حادّ (sharp). From a sharp edge the sense widened to the line that separates one thing from another, and so to a limit or boundary.
