Etymology
فَتْرَة comes from the Semitic root f-t-r, which means to slacken, weaken, or grow lukewarm. The noun names a single stretch of such slackening, and from there it widened to mean any period or interval of time. The related noun فُتور keeps the older sense of languor and tepidness. In classical usage a فَتْرَة was the gap between two prophets, a pause in revelation.
