The verb comes from the triconsonantal Semitic root ج-ل-س (j-l-s), tied to the act of sitting. In older usage it carried the sense of sitting up from a reclining position, and the related noun جَلْس meant high or raised ground. The common meaning later settled as to sit or to take a seat.
