Etymology

The verb comes from the triliteral root r-ḥ-l, which carries the sense of travel and departure. The same root gives رَحْل, the saddle and pack a traveler loads onto a mount, and رِحْلة, a journey. The underlying image is concrete: to saddle up and set off.
