Etymology
مُسْتَعِدّ is the active participle of the Form X verb اِسْتَعَدَّ, "to get ready." It is built on the triliteral root ع-د-د, whose core sense is counting and reckoning. Form X (istafʿala) often adds the idea of putting oneself into a state, so the word means one who has made himself counted and provisioned, that is, ready. The same root gives عَدَّ "to count" and عَدَد "number."
