Etymology
The word is the active participle of the Form VIII verb اِخْتَلَفَ, "to differ." That verb derives from the triliteral root خ-ل-ف, whose base sense is following behind or succeeding. From the idea of things coming one after another in unlike order grew the meaning of varying and differing. So مُخْتَلِف names the thing that diverges from the rest.
