Etymology

خُطَّة comes from the Arabic root خ-ط-ط, which means to draw a line or mark something out. A plan is the course you trace before you act, so the drawn line becomes the scheme. The same root gives خَطّ, a line or piece of handwriting, and the verb خَطَّطَ, to plan. The word is Semitic in origin and has no Indo-European root.
