تَرْجَمَة is the verbal noun of the verb tarjama, to translate or interpret. The root reached Arabic from older Semitic languages, among them Aramaic targem and Akkadian targumannu, an interpreter. The same source gave English the word dragoman, an interpreter who served in the Ottoman East.
