Etymology
Mawjūd is the passive participle of the verb wajada, 'to find'. It is built on the maCCūC pattern, so it literally means 'that which is found', and from there 'present' or 'existing'. The same root w-j-d gives wujūd, 'existence', a central term in Arabic philosophy and Sufi thought.
