ذاهِب is the active participle of the verb ذَهَبَ, meaning 'to go' or 'to depart', built on the فاعِل pattern that names the doer of an action. The triliteral root ذ-ه-ب is old in Arabic and also produces ذَهَب, 'gold'. Related Semitic languages use the same three consonants for 'gold': Hebrew זָהָב and Aramaic דְּהַב. The verbal sense 'to go' looks like a distinctively Arabic development of the root.
