Etymology

حَفْلَة comes from the triliteral root ح-ف-ل, which carries the sense of gathering, assembling, and being full or crowded. The base noun حَفْل means a ceremony or assembly. Adding the tāʾ marbūṭa (ـة) forms the unit noun, a single celebration or party. The same root gives حَافِلَة, the modern Arabic word for a bus, literally the crowded one.
