Etymology
كَرِه is a Form I verb from the Semitic root ك-ر-ه (k-r-h), which carries the sense of aversion and reluctance. The same root yields كُرْه and كَراهِيَة (hatred), مَكْروه (something disliked), and إِكْراه (coercion). The Quranic phrase لا إِكْراهَ في الدِّينِ, 'there is no compulsion in religion', draws on this root. The shared thread is facing or doing something against one's will.
