Etymology
ʿUmr comes from the Semitic triliteral root ʿ-m-r, which links the ideas of long life and of inhabiting or building up a place. The same root gives ʿammara (to build, to live long), maʿmūr (inhabited), and the personal name ʿUmar. The step from 'to live long' to 'span of a life, age' is direct.
