ذَهاب is the verbal noun of the verb ذَهَبَ, 'to go,' so it names the act of going or departing. The verb and its noun come from the triliteral root ذ-ه-ب. The same root also gives ذَهَب, 'gold,' and مَذْهَب, 'doctrine' or 'the way one follows.' Across Semitic languages the cognate root mostly carries the sense 'gold,' as in Hebrew זָהָב; the 'to go' meaning is characteristic of Arabic.
