Etymology
The verb ذَهَبَ goes back to the Proto-Semitic triliteral root *ḏ-h-b. In Arabic this root specialized into the verbal sense 'to go, depart,' whereas in most other Semitic languages the same root denotes 'gold' (compare the Arabic noun ذَهَب dhahab 'gold,' from the very same root). The semantic bridge between 'going/passing' and the gleaming metal is uncertain and debated.
