Etymology
إِذا is an ancient Arabic conditional-temporal particle, commonly analyzed as built on the deictic element ذا ('this/there') — the same deixis found in its sibling particle إِذْ. It is Semitic in origin and is not connected to any Indo-European root. Throughout the history of Arabic it has introduced real or expected conditions and time-clauses, and it opens several famous Qur'anic surahs (e.g. إِذا الشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَتْ).
