Etymology
مَع is a primitive Semitic preposition expressing accompaniment ('with'). It is generally traced to a Proto-Semitic base *maʿ- conveying 'togetherness, company', which also surfaces in the Arabic adverb مَعًا (maʿan, 'together') and the abstract noun مَعِيَّة (maʿiyya, 'company'). As one of the oldest function words its deeper history is debated, and it has no Indo-European connection.
