Etymology
Arabic أَجْل (ʾajl) derives from the triliteral root أ-ج-ل (ʾ-j-l), associated with fixing a term or appointed occasion. From the notion of 'the occasion/cause on account of which something is done,' it came to mean 'reason, cause,' surviving in modern usage almost entirely inside the prepositional phrases مِنْ أَجْلِ ('for the sake of, on account of') and لِأَجْلِ ('for the sake of'). The closely related noun أَجَل from the same root denotes an 'appointed term,' especially the appointed time of death. The Qur'an attests مِنْ أَجْلِ ذَٰلِكَ ('for that reason') in 5:32.
