لَنْ is the standard Classical and Modern Standard Arabic particle that negates the future tense. Medieval grammarians disputed its origin: al-Khalīl ibn Aḥmad held it to be a contraction of لا أَنْ (lā an, 'not that'), while Sībawayh treated it as a simple, indivisible primitive particle. It governs the following imperfect verb in the subjunctive (manṣūb) mood. As a native Semitic negator it has no Indo-European root; its negating element لا has clear cognates across the Semitic family.
