Etymology
بِ is an inherited Proto-Semitic proclitic preposition *bi- meaning 'in, with, by'. It is never written as a free word but is always attached to the following noun, which it puts into the genitive case. It is among the oldest and most frequent function words in the language, with direct counterparts across the whole Semitic family.
