Etymology
غُرْفَة comes from the Semitic root غ-ر-ف, tied to the verb غَرَفَ, to scoop or ladle. In classical usage the word named an upper chamber or loft, and the sense later broadened to any room. The plural غُرَف appears in the Quran for the lofty dwellings of paradise.
