Etymology
وَحيد comes from the Semitic root w-ḥ-d, which carries the idea of being one or alone. It is the faʿīl adjective form of that root, the same root behind wāḥid, 'one,' and waḥda, 'unity.' Cognate roots run across the Semitic family, including Hebrew yāḥīd, 'only,' and the words for 'one' in Hebrew and Aramaic. Arabic is a Semitic language, so it has no Proto-Indo-European root.
