Etymology

تَخَطِّي is the verbal noun of the Form V verb تَخَطَّى, built on the triliteral root خ-ط-و, which carries the basic sense of stepping or striding. The ta- prefix and doubled middle radical of Form V add a reflexive, effortful shade to the plain act of stepping, giving the meaning of stepping over or past something. From that concrete image of a foot crossing a line, the word extended to the abstract sense of overcoming or surpassing.
