Etymology

Tarjama is a quadriliteral verb built on the root t-r-j-m. Arabic took it from Aramaic targem, meaning to translate or interpret, which itself goes back to Akkadian targumannu, an interpreter at a royal court. The same ancient word gave English both dragoman, a diplomatic interpreter, and targum, the term for the old Aramaic translations of the Hebrew Bible. Because the root is Semitic rather than Indo-European, it has no Proto-Indo-European ancestor.
