Etymology

The word comes from the Arabic quadriliteral verb تَرْجَمَ (tarjama), meaning to translate or interpret. Arabic borrowed this verb, along with the related noun تُرْجُمَان (turjuman, interpreter), from Aramaic, which in turn drew on Akkadian targumannu. مُتَرْجِم is simply the active-participle form of that verb, meaning one who translates. The same Aramaic-Akkadian root gave English the word dragoman.
