Etymology

Arabic كيمياء entered the language through medieval scholarship on transmutation and the properties of substances. Its ultimate source is disputed: some scholars trace it to Greek chēmeia or chymeia, meaning the art of alloying metals, while others link it to an Egyptian word for the black soil of the Nile valley. From Arabic al-kīmiyāʔ the term passed into Latin as alchymia, which later split in European languages into both 'alchemy' and 'chemistry'.
