Etymology

تَمَسَّك is the Form V (تَفَعَّل) derivation of the triliteral root م-س-ك, whose base Form I verb مَسَكَ means "to hold, grasp, seize." The ت- prefix and the doubled middle radical mark a reflexive, intensive sense, so the verb literally means "to make oneself grip something firmly." This sense extended from physical grasping to holding fast to an idea, belief, or habit. The root is native Semitic, not a loan, so no Proto-Indo-European root applies.
