Etymology
Habba comes from the triliteral Semitic root h-b-b, in which the second and third consonants are identical and merge into a single doubled sound marked by the shadda. This kind of geminate root is common in Arabic verbs that describe a sudden burst of motion, such as a gust of wind or a person springing up. The core sense is a quick, forceful onset rather than a gradual one, which is why the same verb covers wind picking up and a person jumping to their feet. No further comparative cognates outside Arabic are confidently attested here.
