Etymology
Arabic أَلْماس was borrowed from Persian الماس (almās), which traces back to Greek ἀδάμας (adamas), meaning unbreakable or untameable. The Greek word joins the negative prefix a- with a form of the verb meaning to tame, a reference to the stone's legendary hardness. English diamond and adamant come from the same Greek root, making them distant cousins of the Arabic word.
