Etymology
The verb comes from the triliteral Arabic root و-ح-ي, whose core sense is a quick, quiet sign or hint passed from one party to another. The Form IV pattern أَفْعَلَ adds a causative meaning, so أَوْحَى literally means to cause someone to receive such a sign, hence to reveal or inspire. In the Quran this verb became the standard term for God's communication to prophets, and in later usage it broadened to describe any impression or suggestion that arises quickly, without direct speech.
