Etymology
The verb comes from the Semitic root ʿ-d-w, whose core sense is running, passing by, or going beyond a point. Form V (tafaʿʿala) adds a reflexive or self-directed force, so taʿaddā came to mean acting so as to pass beyond a proper limit, whether a boundary, a law, or another person's rights. The same root gives Arabic the word for enemy, since an enemy is one who has passed over into hostility.
