Etymology

The verb comes from the triliteral Semitic root ف-ج-ر, whose core sense is to split or break something open so that what is inside pours out. The base form فَجَرَ already means to burst open, and the same root gives فجر (fajr), the dawn, the moment light splits the dark. فَجَّر is the doubled, causative form of the root: it means to make something burst open, hence to detonate or explode it. No reliable Indo-European root applies, since Arabic is Semitic, not Indo-European.
