Etymology
The word comes from the Arabic root ء-ج-ر (ʔ-j-r), which carries the sense of wage, reward, or payment for a service. The verb اِسْتَأْجَرَ (istaʾjara) is a Form X derivation meaning to seek to hire or rent something, and مُسْتَأْجِر is its active participle, literally one who does the hiring. The same root gives إِيجَار (rent, lease) and أُجْرَة (fee, fare).
