Etymology

تَخَيُّل is the verbal noun of the Form V verb تَخَيَّلَ, built on the triliteral root خ-ي-ل. That root also gives خَيَال, meaning imagination, shadow, or phantom. The Form V pattern here carries a reflexive sense, so the word literally points to making an image appear to oneself. Arabic is a Semitic language, so it has no Indo-European root behind it.
