Etymology
The word came into Arabic in the twentieth century from French benzine and German Benzin, the names given to the volatile fuel distilled from petroleum. Those European terms trace back to benzoin, a fragrant resin, whose name derives from Arabic lubān jāwī, meaning frankincense of Java. Italian traders shortened this to benzoi, dropping the initial syllable as if it were an article, and the stem benz- later spread through European chemistry to name benzene and benzine. Arabic then reborrowed the modern fuel term, so بِنْزِين is in effect an old Arabic phrase returning home in new clothes.
