Etymology

غُرُوب is the masdar, or verbal noun, of the triliteral root غ-ر-ب (gh-r-b), which carries the sense of going away, departing, or moving toward the west. From the same root come مغرب (place and time of sunset, also the West and Morocco) and غريب (a stranger, one who has gone far away). The root appears across the Semitic languages with the shared idea of the west as the direction where the sun departs.
