Etymology

تَدْخِين is the masdar, or verbal noun, of the Form II verb دخّن (dakhkhana), meaning to make smoke or to smoke something. Both trace back to the Arabic root د-خ-ن, the same root behind دخان (dukhān), the ordinary word for smoke. The Form II pattern تفعيل typically turns a root into causative action, so تدخين literally denotes the act of causing smoke, later narrowed to mean smoking tobacco.
