Etymology

دُخان comes from the Semitic triliteral root د-خ-ن (d-kh-n), which carries the sense of smoking or giving off fumes. Arabic builds the noun by fitting the root into the فُعَال (fuʿāl) vowel pattern, a common template for substances and their emissions. The word appears throughout classical and modern Arabic essentially unchanged in meaning. It also names the 44th chapter of the Quran, Surat ad-Dukhan.
