Etymology

تَسَلُّل is the verbal noun of the Form V verb تَسَلَّلَ, built on the triliteral root س-ل-ل, which carries the basic sense of drawing something out or withdrawing it, as in سَلَّ السَّيْفَ, "he drew the sword." The Form V pattern تفعّل adds a reflexive and gradual shade of meaning, so the word literally suggests drawing oneself out little by little, which shifted to the sense of slipping in or out unnoticed. In modern usage it also became the standard football term for offside.
