Etymology
Karīh comes from the triliteral Semitic root k-r-h, whose base verb kariha means to hate, dislike, or find something repugnant. The word takes the fa'īl pattern, a common Arabic template for adjectives that describe a lasting quality, here the quality of provoking hatred or disgust. The same root gives kurh (aversion), karāhiya (hatred), and makrūh (something disliked, or in Islamic law, a discouraged act). There is no confirmed Indo-European root, since Arabic k-r-h is native Semitic vocabulary.
