Etymology

نَحْل is an old Semitic collective noun for bees, used throughout Classical Arabic and the Quran, where the sixteenth surah is named An-Nahl, "The Bee." Arabic dictionaries also record a root spelled the same way, ن-ح-ل, tied to separate senses such as thinness and giving or bequeathing. Lexicographers treat these as distinct senses sharing a root shape rather than as proven relatives of the bee word. No secure link to a wider Semitic or older root is established, so no cognates are listed here.
