Etymology
Tashkīl is the verbal noun of the Form II verb shakkala, built on the triliteral Semitic root sh-k-l, whose core sense is 'shape' or 'form,' as in the plain noun shakl. Form II verbs in Arabic often carry a causative or intensive meaning, so shakkala came to mean 'to give shape to, to constitute, to arrange.' From there it extended to marking a text with diacritics, since those marks fix the exact spoken 'shape' of a word. The root is native to Arabic, not a borrowing from another language family.
